Doug first joined Corbin Design as a Designer in 1999. As a formally trained graphic designer, he considers it his job to problem-solve and render the best solution for each client. It gives him great satisfaction to design new signs and create the detailed design drawings and mapping elements that bring a new wayfinding system to life.
Doug is originally from Crookston, Minnesota, a small farming community in the northwest part of the state. In school, Art was naturally his favorite subject. After high school Doug served in the United States Army for four years during which time, he achieved the rank of Sergeant E-5, served in Desert Storm, and earned a Bronze Star. He then made the move to Michigan and studied at Ferris State University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Communication. Throughout his career, he's worked in many different design disciplines, including advertising, websites, photo simulations, print design, branding and identity standard development, and now most recently environmental graphic design related to wayfinding with Corbin Design.
Outside of work, Doug enjoys the many opportunities for recreation that living in northern Michigan affords us. He can usually be found on mountain biking trails, cross country skiing, downhill skiing, hiking, or fencing with his son, Rowan. He's a co-founder of the Three Swords Fencing Club in Traverse City, where he's currently acting as club secretary and a member of the board of directors. Doug also enjoys playing and creating content for the role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons.
