Traverse City Parks

The City of Traverse City Parks and Recreation Department manages 34 diverse park spaces. Former signage was aging and featured an outdated city brand. The goal was to create a cohesive sign family that consistently identifies and represents the city parks. Inspiration for the design came from materials used in existing park structures, National Park Service designs, and colors seen in the environment.

NPS park symbols were added to identification signs, to promote the amenities and functions of the various parks. Elements of the City of Traverse City branding were added to signs for park users to easily identify the managing department of the park, as several jurisdictions are managing public parks in the area. The brand was simplified though so the signs will look timeless even if the city opts to update their brand in the future. A local project from start to finish, the City contracted Image 360 to fabricate and install the signage.

Signage clutter was a major issue in the parks and detracted from visitors enjoying the natural environment. Regulatory sign layouts were developed to be multi-purpose and display relevant park rules and information. The cohesive design with the rest of the system makes the signs easily identifiable as holding pertinent information with park users.
